Coronavirus Update

The Department of Education and Training has announced that, due to the evolving coronavirus situation, any planned overseas school excursions should not proceed unless they are to New Zealand or Canada.

This is based on advice received from Victoria’s Chief Health Officer and applies until further notice.

If relevant, we will be contacting our travel insurance provider and will keep you updated on the outcome of claims.

Good hygiene practices are the most effective means of minimising any risk of COVID-19, and we will continue to encourage these practices.

We thank you for your support and understanding and welcome you to contact the school on 03 8762 6839 if you have any further concerns.

Sport at Fountain Gate Secondary College!

Intermediate Tennis at Interschool Sport

Last week, our Intermediate Boys Tennis team had a great day out competing against neighboring schools at Pakenham Regional Centre!

Intermediate and Senior Volleyball

During Week 6, we had two Intermediate teams and two Senior Teams represent Fountain Gate Secondary College at Interschool Sports for volleyball. All teams showed immense sportsmanship, teamwork and integrity. We are thrilled to share the news that our two Intermediate Teams won the grand finals and are on to compete in Regionals!

Rugby News

Term 1 has been off to a great start for all the academy students, with pitch sessions and course work well underway. We have Melbourne Rebels Elite Youth Coach, Pom Simona, still running his highly valuable pitch sessions with each year group, which offers many opportunities for the students to grow and develop their rugby skills.

All information regarding the Pre-Academy will be put out before the end of Term 1.

High Achievers Program 2021

'Let Go of That Failure.'

Our 8B Gateway class, otherwise known as 8 Bold and the Beautiful discussed their failures last week. Art Teacher Mrs. Sheeney wrote down all the student's anonymous 'failures' on the balloon to which Mrs. Sheeny wrote a motivational and supportive message which was placed inside each balloon. This lesson allowed students to reflect on their nominated 'failure' and allow them to face it head-on, ultimately 'letting go of that failure.' The aim of the lesson was to provide students with a physical example of how we can choose to “inflate” our failures but we have the POWER to “deflate” them as well. Students popped the balloons in the studio and read the personalised notes! A great interactive experience that took a creative approach to reflection!

'The Children of the Black Skirt.'

This year's Theatre Studies Production 'The Children of the Black Skirt', is about 3 lost children who stumble across an abandoned orphanage in the bush. Tormented by the black skirt and a cruel governess, the children become trapped in a timeless world, haunted by spirits from the past. Tickets are $10 from the Front Office, Limited seats with only one select performance!

Language and Exchange News

In the Year 7 German Class, students made their own “Schultüte”. “Schultüte” are colourful cones filled with goodies such as lollies and new stationery. In Germany, they are traditionally given to children starting Primary School and are often almost as large as the child!

Reminders for German and Indonesian Classes

-German and Indonesian students need to bring the materials on their book list as these are vital for learning.

-The Year 8 German class recently had a breakfast to support their curriculum.

-We have a language assistant from Germany called Berit who has been working with the Year 9, 11 and 12 students.

-Parents can check Compass for upcoming assessment tasks for the German and Indonesian classes.

Interschool Debating

During Week 6, our Senior Debating Team competed in the First Round of the 2020 Debaters Association of Victoria Competition. The topic of Round One was ' Should Climate Change Denial be Banned.' Our team consisting of Amen and Jalala from Year 11 and Sanjeev from Year 12 had the negative position and brilliantly defended the opinion that climate change denial should not be banned on the premise that banning a certain topic was not only illogical and expensive to enforce, but also took away the freedom of speech. It was an intense debate and unfortunately, we lost out to St Paul's by a mere two points! However, we were thrilled to walk away with 'Best Speaker' Amen Go who was selected by the adjudicator for his charisma, confidence, and engaging and thoughtful speech.

It was a great debate with both teams presenting passionate arguments and we are very proud of our team for not only representing the College with pride but also challenging themselves to step outside of their comfort zone and provide objective and creative arguments! We are very excited to smash out Round 2 next term!

Careers and Pathways News

As always, our Career and Pathways Team are flat out with mentoring and providing support to our students! Our Year 10 students will be learning the differences and options for their Senior Pathways including VCE and VCAL in the upcoming weeks, preparing them for their Senior School Subject Selections in Term 2.

Work Experience is also fast approaching for our Year 10 students with the program running from June 22nd to June 26th. Students need to be organising this as soon as they can so their Work Experience paperwork and forms can be processed! All forms are to be handed into the Pathways Office.  If parents or guardians have questions in relation to this, they can contact the Pathways office on 8762 6839.
