Week 2 and Week 3 Key Dates, Excursions and Activities
We are very excited to introduce an additional new member of staff this year, Suli! Suli is currently in training to become a therapy dog so feel free to come and say hi to him when you see him around the College!
Suli will be coming to school each day under the supervision of his owner, Miss Sally Sherman. His special role as a therapy dog is to react and respond to our students and their environment under the guidance and direction of his owner, supporting students with social and emotional learning needs. We are thrilled to have Suli on board!

Being Sun Smart in 2020
Just a reminder to remain vigilant about sun and UV protection. We encourage everyone to wear a hat when outdoors and try to keep in the shaded areas. Students can access free sunscreen from all the sub-schools, canteen, front office, Student Leadership Office and Library.
NSW and East Gippsland Bushfires
Large scale distressing events impact our school communities in many ways. The bushfires that are impacting a number of our communities have been unsettling and stressful for many people.
Distress may be related to:
- having been directly at risk/exposed to fires (loss of homes, pets, personal belongings)
- being concerned about family or friends
- feelings and memories related to previous experience
- other grief and loss.
The recent fires across a large part of NSW and parts of East Gippsland have affected our students and schools in different ways. It is important to recognize that almost all distress or behavioral change following such an event is normal. There is no such thing as a typical reaction.
Children react in different ways depending on age and personality. Some may show much distress or they may ask many questions and appear preoccupied with the event. Some of these reactions may appear immediately but others may not show themselves for weeks or even months later.
Some reactions may include sleep disturbances, regressive behaviours, nightmares, fear of the dark, clinging to parents/carers, loss or increase in appetite, physical complaints that have no medical basis, aggressive behavior, competition with a sibling for parental attention, withdrawal and/or loss of interest in regular activities.
Children look to the significant adults in their lives for guidance on how to manage their reactions. Parents and teachers can help children cope by remaining calm and reassuring them that they will be all right.
Importantly most children are resilient and return to their previous level of functioning over time.
How you can support your child
- Monitor how much your child is being exposed to television/social media stories regarding the fires; children can be distressed by watching repeated images. Explain to them that news reports will repeat images and stories and it may not be a good idea to keep watching.
- Find out what your child's understanding of the event is and correct misunderstandings or confusion.
- Include your child in making plans for the future.
- Support your child to stay connected to friends.
- Keep to your regular routines and activities as much as possible.
We had prepared information to be released today regarding the concerns of the novel coronavirus. However, there have been new developments since the first of February that has prompted us to adjust the information to make sure it is relevant and up today as the emerging outbreak of novel coronavirus has continued to evolve.
The Commonwealth’s Chief Medical Officer and Victoria’s Chief Health Officer have recommended a stronger precautionary approach to managing coronavirus for travelers returned from mainland China (not including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) from Saturday (1 February 2020).
This recommendation is that parents/guardians/carers should ensure that any student returning from mainland China (not including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) who was in mainland China on or after 1 February 2020 is isolated at home and should not attend school until 14 days after they were last in mainland China.
This recommendation does not apply retrospectively. It applies only to students who were in mainland China on or after 1 February 2020.
The existing advice remains that parents/guardians/carers of students should ensure that any student is isolated at home and should not attend school for 14 days:
·following exposure to any confirmed novel coronavirus case; OR
·after leaving Hubei Province.
The Commonwealth has also advised that: “additional border measures will be implemented to deny entry to Australia to people who have left or transited through mainland China from 1 February 2020, with the exception of Australian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family and aircrews who have been using appropriate personal protective equipment”.
If you have not visited Wuhan city in Hubei Province during the holidays, or other Chinese cities where there has been an outbreak, you should feel confident to send your child to school unless they have any of the above symptoms or contact, in which case, as with other viruses, you should consult your family medical practitioner and keep your child at home until the symptoms have cleared.
This new advice is based on the latest expert recommendations of the Commonwealth’s Chief Medical Officer and Victoria’s Chief Health Officer.
If there is any change in the advice provided to date, we will contact all families again. This information will also be posted in our newsletter with all further developments also noted.

Students Health and Wellbeing
The beginning of the school year should be an exciting time and a fresh start to your schooling routine. However, for many students, starting the school year can at times be stressful or overwhelming. At Fountain Gate Secondary College, our student’s wellbeing and safety is our first priority. We would like to remind all students to check in with themselves emotionally, mentally and physically. Make sure to bring enough food and water to sustain you throughout the day and try to keep out of the heat where possible.
If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to notify a teacher or see our Wellbeing Team who are always available in WB1, WB2 and WB3 (located next to the Gymnasium, see attached map). In our Wellbeing Offices, we provide a safe space harnessed by our incredible Wellbeing practitioners. Additionally, there is coloring and drawing activities available, bean bag chairs, air-conditioning and seats in the Wellbeing Offices for all students to access.
Our Principal Team’s doors are always open as well so if there are any concerns or issues do not hesitate to check in with them.
Elite Basketball Program with Envision Basketball
USA certified basketball trainer, Kareem Drayton (from Envision Basketball) is running an elite basketball program here in our gym outside of school hours.
All students at Fountain Gate Secondary (and extended to friends/family) have the opportunity to try a free basketball skills class on either Wednesday afternoons or Saturday mornings (running from the 5th of February).
Kareem is a certified global trainer from Brooklyn, New York who now lives in Australia teaching basketball. He has been regularly featured in the local paper and magazines for the incredible work he and his team do within the South East.

Campus Developments and Improvements
Over the school holidays, there have been a number of exciting changes and projects throughout the College including the new 'Rage Cage,' fake grass areas, locker bays, extended seating and new classroom additions.

Fountain Gate Secondary College is and has always been committed to child safety with ongoing developments, implementations and evaluations of risk management strategies to ensure child safety in school environments.
- Fountain Gate Secondary College has a zero-tolerance policy for child abuse. Child abuse includes physical violence, sexual offenses, serious emotional or psychological abuse and serious neglect.
- All people engaged or recruited for child-related work, including volunteers, are required to hold a current Working with Children Check and/or VIT teacher registration to provide evidence for the Fountain Gate Secondary College’s records. This is consistent with the Fountain Gate Secondary College Staff Register Policy and Working with Children Check Policy.
- Fountain Gate Secondary College is committed to cultural safety for Aboriginal children, cultural safety for children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a safe environment for children with a disability by making appropriate accommodations.
Refresher on School Uniform Policy
Fountain Gate Secondary College is a uniform College that has been set out by the College School Council. It is a requirement that all students wear the full school uniform, including school shoes, to and from school.
When timetabled for Physical Education or Sport Education classes, all students are required to wear the full Physical Education uniform for Physical Education in Years 7 – 10 and for Sport Education in Years 7 & 8.
On the days when the students do not have Physical Education and Sport Education, they must wear their full school uniform.

Personal Mobile Device Policy
The use of mobile phones in class is disruptive to the learning environment and the smooth running of the school. This policy is designed to provide an effective learning environment for all people. From Term 1, 2020, the Victorian Government has banned mobile phones for all students at Victorian state primary and secondary schools to help reduce distraction, tackle cyberbullying and improve learning outcomes for students.
Personal mobile devices are portable computing and communication devices such as smartphones, tablets and smartwatches.
Fountain Gate Secondary School understands that students may bring a personal mobile device to school, particularly if they are traveling independently to and from school or to extra-curricular activities.
• During school hours, from 8:45am-2:59pm, personal mobile devices must be switched off, and locked securely in the student’s locker;
• If a student needs to access their mobile phone device during before or after school events such as clubs and other special events.
In some circumstances, students’ personal mobile devices will be confiscated and stored securely at the Front Office. In these circumstances, the mobile device will usually be returned to the student or their parent/carer at the end of the school day. Students are not permitted to access their personal mobile devices during lunchtime or recess, unless they have sought and been granted permission from a supervising teacher or have been granted an exemption to this Policy by the Principal.
There may be circumstances in which a student may apply to the Principal for an exemption from this policy on the basis of safety and/or wellbeing requirements particular to that student. Other exemptions include paying for food at the Canteen, when used for educational purposes (with strict permission given by the subject teacher), and when smartwatches are used as a watch only.

Fountain Gate Secondary College seeks to ensure all students are safe and personally grow in their academic and social learning. Fountain Gate Secondary College is committed to ensuring that every child feels safe in our school environment and the College has an absolute zero tolerance to any form of child abuse.
Fountain Gate Secondary College has legal and moral obligations to contact authorities which we are worried about a child’s safety, which we follow rigorously. All allegations and safety concerns will be treated very seriously and consistently in line with our child safety policies and procedures. Fountain Gate Secondary College fully supports the Child Safety Standards through a variety of programs including the Wellbeing Team, Home Groups and our program for supporting students with a disability. We are committed to the safety of children from a culturally and/or linguistically diverse background, and to providing a safe environment for children with a disability. Elements of Child Safety are also covered in our Health curriculum and reflected in our screening and recruitment practices for all staff and volunteers. Fountain Gate Secondary College has specific policies, procedures, and training in place that supports our leadership team, staff and volunteers to achieve these commitments.
